Does the Architect have to be in the dream level of each dream?

Can the architect wake up and the dream keep going?  Nash (Luke Haas) is the architect in the first main dream sequence, but he is not in level 2 in the Japanese castle.  The second dream is really still part of the one dream the dreamer is having so could the architect just control things from the level one, which is possibly the least dangerous?  It's all a dream right?  It is helpful for the architect to keep going with them because if they need changes or help with the world they can navigate it the best or if they need them to do anything else in the world they can help.  Ariadne goes with them all they way done to limbo, but Nash only goes to level one.  Which means Arthur or Cobb is the architect in level two at the beginning of the film.  Mal says Arthur is the architect and then shoots him.  So that makes sense.  I guess the dreamer doesn't need an architect because they can do it themselves.  The architect is only there so the extractors can create and control the world for their benefit.

FYI I promise this blog and my posts will not only be about Inception.  It's just the first film I'm focusing one right now.  Two more main parts of the analysis to come.
